How to tie safety shoes?
The method for tying safety shoes laces is almost the same as tying regular shoes laces, but with a few important considerations for comfort, safety, and fit.
Here is a step-by-step guide, along with tips for common issues like heel slippage or laces that are too long.
The Basic Method (Standard Lacing for common laces)
Prepare the Safety shoes: Unlace the top 3-4 eyelets so the tongue can be pulled forward. This makes it easier to put your foot in.
Wear Appropriate Socks: Always wear thick, durable work socks. This provides cushioning and helps prevent blisters.
Insert Your Foot: Slide your foot into the safety shoes. Push your foot back so your heel is firmly seated against the back of the boot.
Lock the Heel (Heel Lock): Before tightening the laces, tap your heel on the ground a few times to ensure that all your feet are put in.
Tighten the Laces:
Start at the bottom (toe area) and pull the laces tight.
Step by step upwards, pulling each cross section tight. The boot should be snug, but not painfully tight, over the instep (top of your foot).
Secure the Top: Tie a standard bow knot (loop, swoop, and pull). A double knot is highly recommended for safety shoes to prevent the laces from coming undone and becoming a tripping hazard.
New and special kind of laces- boa laces(How to tie)
In the recent years, boa laces are used more and more in safety shoes now, so how should we tie boa laces? First press down the rotary knob, after you hear the click sound, then turn the rotary knob until the laces are tight enough. When you need to loose the laces, it is also easy, just pull upwards the rotary knob, after you hear the click sound, then pull outward the shoes tongue until the laces are loose enough.

The Best Lacing Techniques for Safety Shoes
Depending on your specific foot shape or issues you are having, you can use specific lacing techniques.
- The “Heel Lock” (or “Runner’s Loop”)
Best for: Preventing heel slippage and blisters.
If your heel lifts out of the safety shoes when you walk, this is the most important technique.
How to do it: Lace the safety shoes normally until you reach the second-to-last eyelet.
Instead of crossing the lace over, thread each lace straight up into the last eyelet on the same side, creating a small loop on each side.
Then, cross the laces over and thread them through the opposite loops you just created.
Pull tight to lock the heel, then tie as usual.
- The Toe-Relief Lacing
Best for: Wide feet or toes that feel cramped.
How to do it: Lace the bottom section (near the toes) loosely or skip the first set of eyelets entirely. Once you reach the mid-foot, tighten the laces normally. This gives your toes more room to splay.
- The Instep Relief Lacing
Best for: High arches or pressure on the top of the foot.
How to do it: Lace the safety shoes normally, but at the point where the pressure is worst, do not cross the laces. Instead, run the lace straight up the inside of the safety shoes to the next eyelet before resuming the criss-cross pattern. This creates a “bypass” that relieves pressure.

Important Safety Considerations
- Tuck in the Ends: Never let the loops and ends of your laces dangle. They can get caught on machinery, ladders, or pallets, causing you to trip or fall. Tuck the knot and loops inside the top of theshoe or under a lace flap if the safety shoe has one.
- Don’t Over-Tighten: Cutting off circulation can lead to numbness or cold feet. The boot should be snug enough to prevent your foot from sliding forward (which would smash your toes into the steel toe cap), but not so tight that it causes pain.
- Check for Wear: Inspect your laces regularly. If they are fraying or have damagedspots, replace them immediately. A broken lace at the wrong time can compromise the fit of the safety shoes and your safety.
